평면에서 관계의 공간으로
- 2026 하영준 개인전 작가노트
나의 작업은 문인화 정신과 수묵의 사유에서 출발한다. 그러나 평면 위의 선과 번짐만으로는 내가 인식하는 세계의 관계를 충분히 담아내기 어려웠다. 내가 바라보는 세계는 단순한 2차원의 평면이 아니라, 서로 겹치고 스며들며 끊임없이 변화하는 관계의 공간에 가깝기 때문이다. 이러한 인식은 작업의 방향을 ‘평면’에서 ‘공간’으로 확장시키게 만들었다.
작업 속의 까치와 호랑이, 코끼리와 파초는 더 이상 각각 독립된 대상에 머물지 않는다. 이들은 서로 얽히고 침투하며 하나의 흐름을 형성하고, 중심과 주변의 경계 또한 점차 흐려진다. 화면은 고정된 이미지를 넘어 살아 있는 구조처럼 호흡한다. 이는 대상을 개별적 실체가 아니라 관계 속 존재로 바라보는 문인화 정신의 세계관과 맞닿아 있다.

나의 작업은 단순한 재현에 목적이 있지 않다. 나는 화면 안에서 발생하는 관계와 흐름, 그리고 긴장에 주목한다. 그래서 화면이 잘려 나간 자리에는 ‘비움’이 생기고, 남겨진 형태는 다시 ‘채움’으로 작동한다. 이 두 요소는 서로 대립하지 않고 공존하며 하나의 공간감을 만들어 낸다. 그 과정에서 평면은 해체되고, 화면은 깊이와 호흡을 지닌 입체적 공간으로 확장된다.
푸른색 또한 단순한 색채의 선택이 아니다. 먹이 가진 깊이와 여운을 유지하면서도, 청색은 화면에 보다 선명한 감각과 현대적인 공간감을 부여한다. 이는 전통적 수묵의 정서를 유지하면서도 동시대적 감각으로 확장하려는 나의 태도와 연결된다.
결국 나의 작업은 문인화 정신에서 출발하지만, 동시에 그것을 오늘의 감각으로 재창조하고 확장해 가는 과정에 있다. 선은 잘려 나가고 평면은 공간으로 변화하지만, 나는 여전히 문인화 정신 위에 서 있다. 다만 그 정신을 지금의 언어와 감각으로 다시 써 내려가고 있을 뿐이다.

From Plane to a Space of Relations

My work begins with the spirit of literati painting and the contemplative philosophy of ink painting. However, the lines and ink washes on a flat surface alone were not enough to fully contain the relationships I perceive in the world. The world I see is not a simple two-dimensional plane, but rather a space of relationships in which forms overlap, permeate one another, and continuously transform. This perception led my work to expand from the “plane” into “space.”
Within my work, magpies and tigers, elephants and banana leaves no longer remain as isolated subjects. They intertwine, penetrate, and merge into a single flow, while the boundaries between center and periphery gradually dissolve. The image no longer functions as a fixed representation, but instead breathes like a living structure. In this sense, my work resonates with the worldview of literati painting, which understands existence not as independent entities, but as beings formed through relationships.

My work is not concerned merely with representation. I focus instead on the relationships, movements, and tensions that emerge within the image. The areas cut away from the surface create “emptiness,” while the remaining forms become acts of “fullness.” These two elements do not oppose one another; rather, they coexist and together construct a sense of spatial depth. Through this process, the flat surface is dismantled, and the image expands into a dimensional space filled with depth and breath.
The use of blue is also more than a simple chromatic choice. While preserving the depth and resonance inherent in ink, blue introduces a sharper sensibility and a contemporary sense of space into the image. In this way, it reflects my attempt to extend the emotional and philosophical tradition of ink painting into a contemporary visual language.
Ultimately, my work begins with the spirit of literati painting, while simultaneously seeking to reinterpret and expand it through contemporary perception and sensibility. Lines are cut away, and the plane transforms into space. Yet I still stand upon the foundation of literati painting. I am simply rewriting that spirit through the language and sensibility of the present.

홍익대학교 미술대학 동양화과 및 동 대학원을 졸업하고, 성균관대학교 동양철학과 예술철학전공 박사학위를 받았다. 개인전 14회와 단체전 및 초대전 300여 회를 했다. 1995년 동아미술제 문인화부문에서 ‘대상’ 및 1996년 대한민국미술대전 한국화부문에서 ‘우수상’을 수상했다. 저서는 『시로써 그림을 탐하다』(2016)가 있고, 학술논문은 「한국 현대문인화의 제 경향연구」 및 「한국 문인화의 원류 및 유파」 등 15편이 있다.
