The Location, 경로
(the location, the best of darkness and brightness)
우리 삶의 축적된 경로를 통해서 도달한 어느 지점에서 바라보는 풍경은 과거의 시선과 다르게 느껴질 때가 있다. 때로는 오래된 풍경, 익숙한 공간 속에서 마저도 새로움을 느낄 수도 있고 낯선 풍경이 될 수도 있다. 이는 바라보는 이의 관점과 사회적 의미 속에서의 위치와 경험에 따라 바뀔 수도 있고, 혹은 선택적으로 다르게 인식하고 바라볼 수도 있을 듯하다.
선택적인 어둠과 밝음, 도심 속의 공존과 자연물의 혼재된 이미지 속에서 나의 시선을 통해서 현재의 위치와 나아가고 있는 우리의 모습들을 바라보고 있다.
장소성은 그곳에서 드러나는 특별한 성격을 의미한다. 오래된 집과 스페이스 캔의 성격이 다른 두 곳에서의 전시를 통해서 오래된 공간에서는 그간의 작업에서 탐색해오며 느껴왔던 현상들을 중첩된 이미지와 함축적인 상징을 통해 포괄적인 의미로서 삶의 ‘경로’를 표현하였으며, 현대적 공간에서는 이러한 경로를 통해 도달한 현재 위치에서의 이야기들을 다루고 있다.

최근 “변곡섬(Island of Inflection)”과 “섬(The Islanding)” 전시에서 극강의 대치되는 시간과 순환되는 삶의 경험 속에서 느끼는 감정과 모순적인 현상들에 대해 집중하였고, 그럼에도 결국에는 귀속되어 고립되는 섬과 같은 상징적 공간 속에 쉼이 되는 대상들을 찾아서 함께 표현하고자 하였다.
이러한 과정을 통해서 현재는 퇴색된 기억의 순간들이 중첩되어 있으며 여전히 이동하고 있는 현상으로 비춰질 수 있다는 관점을 가지게 되었다. 현재의 시점이 탁색되고 지워짐을 반복하는 모습일 수도 있다는 설정은 오히려 자유로운 시각과 표현을 추구할 수 있는 동기를 부여해 준다. 다중적 구조 속 메시지의 전달은 형식 안에서의 표현적 어려움이 있으나 늘 그렇듯 흥미롭고 생경한 작업 과정일 수 있다.
오랜 시간 지녀온 삶과 존속된 공간에 대한 주제와 실험들이 이번 “The Location, 경로” 전시를 통해서 보다 명확해지고 또한 열려있는 공감이 되기를 기대해 본다.

The Location
(The Location, The Best of Darkness and Brightness)
We reach a point through the accumulated path of life, and the scenery seen from there feels different from the past perspectives. Sometimes, old scenery and familiar space may seem fresh and become an unfamiliar scenery. The scenery may change depending on the viewer’s perspective, position in social meaning, and experience, or it may be selectively perceived differently.
We see where we currently stand and where we are headed from our own view inside the images mixed with selective darkness, brightness, nature and co-existence in city.
“Placeness” means a specific characteristic revealed in that place. The characteristics of Old House and Space Can have been expressed in exhibitions held at two different places. In old space, the phenomena that have been felt throughout the previous works express “Path” of life as a comprehensive meaning by using the implicative symbols and overlapping images. Meanwhile, modern space covers stories of the current position reached after passing those paths.

The recent exhibition, Island of Reflection and The Islanding, focused on contradictory phenomena and feelings that are felt within the experiences from extremely confronting time and circulating life. They also expressed the objects that add pause to the symbolic spaces, such as the attributed and isolated islands.
These processes led to the idea that memories that faded away overlap and can be seen as phenomena that still move. The idea that the present time may be repeatedly blended and erased rather grants the motivation to pursue free point of views and expressions. Although it is hard to deliver and express the message in the multi-layered structure, it is always the interesting and new process of work.
I hope that “The Location” will be a great opportunity to clarify and arouse open empathy on themes and experiments of past life and continued space.
