Harmony and the 4 Experiences

- Father, Mozart, Hesse, Hemingway -

Harmony is the topic of artist, Seha Lee's pieces. The dictionary meaning is the science of the structure, relation, and progression of chords. Here harmonious chords brings music and shapes together. Seha Lee has discovered the ability to find the two meanings that appear to be the same, but are different from each other at the same time.

It is probable that the simultaneous feelings comes from the early days of her elementary school years when her father brought home a big record player. However, a harmonious battle formed between the father who enjoyed the traditional music and the young girl who wished to explore the western classical music. To Seha, the sweet and sophisticated melody from the western classical music was much more interesting than spending time with her fellow peers. With the desire to continue listening to western classical music, the young daughter, who was the last child amongst the eight siblings ended up overruling her father's will to listen to his traditional songs. The artist grew up to further fall in love with Mozart during her middle and high school days. Her respect and love for Mozart was immeasurable and even continued on during her pregnancy onto her son who listened to Mozart's prenatal music. In 2005, the 250th anniversary year for Mozart, she still vividly remembers the thrill of receiving a collection of CDs as a gift from her young son that contained a 100 songs by Mozart. From an artist's point of view, Mozart who created the perfect music, was like a god and was eternal. A collection of masterpieces such as Moet and Van Gogh that Seha has seen since some time; she remembers her childhood when she used to compare and analyze the replica copies of some masterpieces of the century hanging in the hallway of her elementary school. The flowers in the garden created by her father in his wide yard are still in full bloom inside the artist. Seha gradually came to realize that it was her destiny to become a painter thanks to all the different kinds of fruit trees, especially the vines that surround the house and the sound of the wind from the vast bamboo fields above the deep crypt. Growing up in her father's garden, she soon invited Mozart into her life and started to work on her theme: Harmony.

In the late 20's by running an art academy Seha was able to accumulate wealth, but when she also struggled mentally facing depression from the guilt of not participating in the true democratization movement, reading Herman's Damien and trying to become Sinclair is a shortcut to finding her own identity. Becoming more adventurous, Seha soon explored the vast world and travelled internationally, living abroad for 11 years. This is when she met Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea". Upon several reads, she also grew the courage and self-confidence that was engraved into her body that 'She may lose a battle, but never a war'. Regardless of whether it's a painting or an installation, to express her passion she collected hundreds of violins as if she was paranoid. Although occasionally installation projects made up of several violins, Seha is still curious how she will express over 300 violins that she collected into her installation art. Perhaps the word 'magnificent' will be used to describe the project when completed. It is creation and expansion through the harmony of reverberation and modeling that appears in works using these objects. She thinks she collected so many violin objects because she believes the eco gushing out could not be resolved with a plain canvas alone. The truth is, without using the collection of violin objects, she has already been working on paintings with a scale and density that surprises us. Also, as if she was dedicating it to Hemingway, she produced an exhibition of "The Old Man and the Sea" that was over 5 meters with wooden boards. It's unbelievable that a piece like this is created by a woman artist. No, regardless of gender, she dreams and expresses in a scale that is more formidable than any other artist in the world. There is also concrete plan to harmonize even the four elements of earth, fire, water, air as if it were string quartet. Even today, the artist Seha Lee is a portrait of an artist who wanted to become Romanian's sculptor 'Brancusi'. Like the quote "Create like a god, command like an emperor, work like a slave", Seha becomes the god, the emperor and the slave, and burns her passion to live as an artist. She has incredible passion so hot when talking about her work. However, due to her health condition, she is currently on sick leave.

The Dan-gun era 4354, early summer

Art Critic Lee Seung-Woo
