Seeing the Layers of Humanity

: Revealing the Dual Existence between Moment and Infinity

In recent years, Young-Mi Park has been painting most of her works on ceramic discs instead of the canvases on which she used to paint. The artist regards the process of making ceramics as better suited to her artistic direction than utilizing premade canvases. The ceramics require creating the shape of the clay, baking it at a high temperature, painting on it, baking it again. The final colors depend on the changes of temperature. This process of work may mean the way the artist understands art, humans, and the world, or expressing her gaze at the outside world. The artist consistently titles these works “Layers of Memory. The titling suggests connections to the processes, flow, and levels in which humans live and work based on the premise of three-dimensional and complex perspectives and understandings.

The artist uses her brushstrokes to represent herself through pictorial means, and her brushstrokes serve as concise and implicit renderings of her way of thinking. The life of the artist has required many different types of brush strokes. The artist reduced her usage of lines to horizontal ones that replaced all of them. However, sometimes these lines are lines drawn on a three-dimensional ceramic work that looks like a thinly cut cylinder, so depending on the angle at which the work is viewed, it may appear that sedimentary layers such as strata have been reproduced. The artist seems to discover that the deposited strata have the power to capture the passage of time, even though the color of the soil is different. Relying on the power of a simple line to evoke imaginative possibilities, the artist draws rough or thin lines on the surface, which she creates through time. After that, it seems that all the energy stored in her heart is actually consumed through the process of baking it again.

The fired ceramic works shown in this exhibition are the pieces of life that artist Park Young-mi sought so much to find. The artist can't tell anything specific, so she can't take it out and show it, but nevertheless, she has created a work called “Layers of Memoy” that remain strewn with traces of life. All of her experiences are contained in these works, but none of them are revealed in detail. Moments are only revealed through the cross sections of strata-like colors are found in the works in which the flow of the line changes from dark to light, strong to blurry, or rough to colorful. In her works, the lines drawn by the artist in the process and flow of time look like moments, cross sections, and stagnant colors. Here, it seems that it is only a being with limitations, but looking backwards, it makes us realize that it is a being that can imagine many things that are not known from a compressed point. In this way, her works encourage us to look back on the meaning of human existence.

Park’s work provides opportunities to think about human experience and its relationship to art. In her work, time, process, and flow and are only revealed as through single sections. As if practicing her performance, the artist makes pottery and repeats repainting with colors and lines to make each one into a work. This continuous process demonstrates the artist's quest to find a world that can extend and expand from her memories. Additionally, her work seems to represent an insightful perspective on a dual and universal human whose dreams about and desires infinity, even though it is bound to stay within the moment and the limit. Humans cannot capture all of passing time in a moment, but nevertheless, with the power of imagination from the cross-sectional space where the traces of the moment are engraved, she dreams and draws forever. The artist expresses a path through her work that shows the possibility of human beings that can be art and transcend limits.
