She describes nature in her recent paintings. Of course, nature itself does not exist in any of her painting. What is nature as a subject matter? What does she paint? A Greek philosopher, Aristotle classifies nature in physics and natura. According to him, the physical nature is what we perceive sensually while natura refers to the ideological nature, which is the cause of the physical nature. The physical nature cannot exist without the cause, which is the characteristic of nature. It is the essential energy of nature that is the source of life.

The energy of nature and the source of life don’t have any specific color and form. The issue of color and form can be explained in the physical nature. However, it is impossible to define them without the energy of nature and the source of life. Viewed from the aspect of Oriental philosophy, there is a concept called yin-yang, which is the balance of everything that is related to one another. It means that yin stands for the reason of being while yang is the effect of how yin is established beyond being. The relationship between nature and the characteristic of nature, the balance of yin and yang are concepts that are similar to a German philosopher, Martin Heidegger’s concept of being. To be specific, a being is made based on its will like the characteristic of nature is the cause of nature and yang is the effect of how yin is established. All of those concepts are about life, energy, vitality, and motility, which are in a positive transition.

Finally, the nature that she tries to describe seems to be explained.  She describes life and energy of nature, which are about vitality and motility.  She describes nature in transition that is continuously changing and flowing.  It is like the hardened trace of nature that seems to be flowing.  Transition and change are words that are related to the concept of time, which passes so slowly that we cannot perceive it easily.  However, there is no moment that is same as other moments in the spectrum of time.  That the invisible time flows repeatedly is similar to how we live our daily lives in the inertia of life.  In other words, it is like the power of repetition that leads to a positive change in every moment.  Is there the trace of repetition that makes the difference in her painting?  Can the viewers feel the energy, vitality, and motility of nature in it?

Nature is contrasted with artificiality, human work and human power in meaning.  For example, a word, ‘natural’ includes meanings, ‘unaffected’ and ‘wild’.  There is no artificiality in nature.  Words like ‘artificiality’, ‘human work’, and ‘human power’ are about a human thing.  A phrase, ‘there is no artificiality in nature’ means that there no human being, which can be compared with the spontaneous feature of painting because there is no room for artificiality, planning, and inevitability.  It means that spontaneity of art is like the rule of art and what makes a painting is in the painting, which explains a modernistic paradigm of art, the intrinsic principle of painting.  It is not just a painter who a painting can be made by.  What creates a painting is actually a painting itself.  A painter is just an assistant who helps his or her painting create it.  He is the one who just sets the minimum standards for his painting to make it have its own logic.  After he sets the minimum standards, the painting creates itself.  He is the one who has to set the minimum standards and limitation, but how his painting is created depends entirely on a chance factor.  It looks like a repetition, but, in fact, we can see a painting establish itself, creating a lot of differences.

natural_227.3x181.8cm_mixed media_2017

As the main technique of her painting, she uses a feature that water and oil don’t mix with each other.  She applies paints on the edge of her canvas with her brush, and they are placed at a certain spot after flowing down on the surface of her canvas.  Each of her brush marks is placed in a different spot from one another, having its own shape.  She doesn’t know when it stops flowing down.  Nor does she know how it leaves a trace.  She can just assume the moment and the spot from her experience of working on her painting repeatedly, which tells us that she is a seasoned painter.  She gets the sense of them because she has been working repeatedly like an ascetic who tries to rise above himself.  While she lets go of the greed for herself, her painting fills the empty spot in her mind.  Her painting is about a state that makes her a passive observer who contemplates the process of making a painting that creates its own shape, which is how she makes a painting make itself.

Therefore, her painting has various stains that are colorful and tactile.  Can the viewers feel the energy of life, vitality, motility of nature, and transition in nature?  I am sure that they certainly feel an existence flowing down and stopping at a certain spot, the passage of time that flows repeatedly and the surface of a painting that is visible and tactile.
