감각적인 사사로움을 물리치고 시각의 순수성에 의지해서 세계를 바라보는 작가의 태도는 심재(心齋)와 닮아 있다. 참은 빈곳으로 보이기 때문에 비워야 사물을 제대로 볼 수 있듯이 파도에서 파도가 비워지는 순간을 찾는 것이다. 소리를 경계하고 눈으로 응하여 마음으로 깨달아야 비로소 자연의 신묘함과 깊은 이치를 이해한다는 깨달음 때문인지 스타일면에도 작은 변화가 생겼다. 사실적이고 섬세한 묘사에 치중했던 전작과 달리 대범하고 거친 터치가 화면에 등장하고 있는 것이다. 근경 혹은 원경의 파도가 대범한 붓놀림으로 처리되어 있는데 이것은 마치 또는 아웃포커싱이 되어 원근을 강조한 것처럼 혹은 부드럽게 부서지는 포말의 느낌으로 사실적으로 묘사된 중심부를 받쳐주고 있다.
이로 인해 작품안에는 두 개의 프레임이 존재하게 되는데 하나는 앞서 언급했듯이 빛과 싸우는 시선이고 다른 하나는 눈부심을 이겨내고 파도를 응시하는 작가의 시선이다. 이 두 프레임은 파도의 일어남과 부서짐 그리고 빛의 산란에 맟추어 섬세하게 계산되어 있어서 언뜻 알아차리기 힘들만큼 자연스러워 보이는데 그만큼 지금 우리가 보고 있는 것이 세계의 참모습인지 아니면 그림자에 불과한 것인지를 알아내기가 어렵다는 것이다.
삶의 무게란 결국 자신의 의식속에 갇혀 세계를 바로 보지 못하는 것에 기인한다고 하는 쇼펜하우어의 말처럼 눈 앞에 쳐져있는 ‘마야의 베일’을 걷어 버리는 것이 필요한 것이다. 삶에 대한 고민과 번뇌가 쌓일수록 우리에게 필요한 것은 관조를 통한 성찰이고 결국 관조의 기쁨은 밀려오고 쓸려나가는 파도에 자신을 실어 비워내는 것에서 온다는 것을 작가는 파도를 통해 보여주고 있는 것이다.

The artist's attitude to see world with purity rather than senses looks like Simjae(心齋). Truth can be seen like empty, thus if one sees real things, one must empty oneself. As such, it seeks a moment of emptiness of wave. There is a slight difference in style thanks to the enlightenment that the truth of nature can be achieved not by sound but by eyes and mind. While previous works focused on detailed description, new paintings have bold and rough touch. Bold brush touch on close-range view or far-range view looks like a stress of distance with out-focusing supporting the center where form is expressed vividly. Accordingly, there are two frames in a work : One is to fight against light and the other is to glare at wave overcoming shine. Such two frames look very natural as they are delicately calculated according ti the creation, break and dispersion of wave. It demonstrates that it is such hard to discern real or shadow in our world. As Schopenhauer said, the weight of life is caused by not seeing the world because of entrapped by own consciousness, it is the very time to remove our 'veil of Maya'. The more agony of life we have, the more we need is reflection through contemplation. Thus, the artist tells that joy of contemplation comes from the emptiness of self in the wave.

작가 조충래는 경남 함안에서 태어나 마산중앙고를 거쳐 1987년 홍익대학교 미술대학 서양화과를 졸업하고 동 교육대학원에서 미술교육과를 졸업했다.
지금까지 18회의 개인전을 개최하였고 1986년부터 현재까지 250여 회에 달하는 단체전에 참여하였다. 1986 동아미술상, 1987, 1990 대한민국 미술대전 특선 등을 수상하였으며, 국립강릉대, 국립경상대, 한국교원대, 신라대, 부산문화예대, 인덕공대, 한성대 홍익대 등에서 강사를 역임했다. 현재 한국미술협회, WAVE, 일산미술인회, 고양미협 회원으로 활동하고 있으며, 계원예술대학교 등에서 강의하고 있다.
Artist Jo Chung Rae was born at Haman in Gyeongnam. He studied at Masan Jungang High School. In 1987 he graduated from the Department of Western Art, College of Art at Hongik University. He also studied at the graduate school of education at Hongik University.
So far, he held 18 private exhibits and about 200 group exhibits since 1986. His artistic world was recognized by his awards including Donga Art Prize in 1986 and Special Selection Prize at the Korean Art Contest in 1990. He taught at Gangneung National University, Gyeongsang National University, Korea National University of Education, Silla University, Busan Culture and Art College, Induk Technical College, Hansung University and Hongik University. Currently, he is a member of Korea Fine Arts Association,, WAVE, Ilsan Arts Association and Goyang Arts Association, and teaches at Gyewon Art College.
