강구원 작가에게 있어서 우연은 작가가 시작한 작업을 완성해주는, 인간의 의지가 미치지 못하는 곳에서 작용하는 힘이며 대자연의 질서의 일부이고 절대자의 섭리다. 어떤 계획이나 의도가 앞서 작용할 수 없는 우연이 작가의 의도와 만나 만들어내는 변화는 작가에게 우연을 지배하는 필연이라는 이름의 어떤 거역할 수 없는 질서를, 그리고 그 뒤에서 작용하는 절대자의 섭리를 인지하게 한다. 대자연의 질서 속에 작가가 의도하지 않았던 우연이 일으키는 경이를 거리를 두고 지켜보며 우연이 주는 예기치 않았던 선물을 작품의 완성에 포함시키는 그가 공들여 여백을 가다듬는 대신에 특징을 잡아내는 크로키를 하듯 탄성과 순발력을 이용한 보다 적극적인 표현 방법을 택한 것은 결코 우연이 아닌 것으로 보인다.
이렇듯 그의 행위 뒤에 감춰진 그의 정신은 우리가 직접적으로 포착할 수는 없지만 그의 우연에 대한 적극적 기대 속에 함축되어 있다. 이쯤에서 우리는 그가 왜 그렇게 우연에 천착(穿鑿)하는가에 대한 물음을 묻지 않을 수 없다. 그것은 자신의 의지와 노력을 넘어서는 절대자의 섭리에 대한 작가 자신의 깨달음에 의해 생긴 겸허함 때문이다. 그래서 그것은 그의 바람이요 기도이기도 하다.

The relatively light and clear colors of the previous artwork are hard to be seen now, and the heavy and turbid colors like black and gray seem to float in the middle. The chance operations, which have long made the subject of the artist's persistent pursuit, make more vigorous appearances than ever. For the artist, chance is part of the Nature's Order and would mean God's will or the force that helps to complete his unfinished work by acting on where man's will cannot reach. The unexpected turns that take place as a result of chance operations make him understand the presence of the irrefutable Order and see the inevitable disguised beneath chance. As the artist incorporates within his artwork the wondrous gifts that chance brings about under the Nature's Order, it seems only natural for him to use flexibility and agility of his strokes as when he does 'croquis', the sketching technique based on the same skills, instead of sweating to refine the center of his canvas.
The spirit that lies behind this attitude is implied, if not grasped directly, in his eager anticipation of chance operations. At this point, we find ourselves wondering why he puts so much emphasis on them. The answer is in his being as humble as he could get, convinced of God's will which intervenes when his own efforts and good will are all exhausted. Thus chance becomes an alias of hope and prayer.
