인(因)- 원인을 이루는 근본 동기
연(緣)- 원인을 도와 결과를 낳게 하는 작용
즉, 인연은 결과를 만드는 직접적인 힘과 그를 돕는 외적이고 간접적인 힘을 말한다. 그 동안 자연을 소재 또는 주제로 다뤄온 많은 예술가들은 어떤 이유에서 처음 자연을 품게 되었을까? 그리고 어떤 이유로 그 관계를 지속하고 있는 것일까? 예로부터 동양은 자연을 인간의 삶을 위한 터전으로 인식하여 공론의 대상으로 보았다. 반면에 서양은 자연을 이지적으로 분석하며 이용 가능한 가치로 삼아왔다. 동양은 자연을 그대로 받아들여 삶과 조화를 이루는데 집중한 반면 서양은 인간을 위한 물질적 가치로 파악하는 경향이 강했다. 이러한 동·서간 생각의 차이는 서로 다른 문화적 특성을 띠고 발전해왔으나, 오늘날 빈번한 교류와 접촉을 통해 상호이해의 폭을 넓혀가고 있다. 21세기 자연과 인간에 관한 새로운 패러다임의 세계는 인간이든 자연이든 나눔과 공유에 집중되고 있다. 이러한 시대를 살아가는 현대인들과 동시대미술에 작은 질문을 던지고자 한다. 오늘날 우리는 어떤 생각과 태도로 자연을 품는가? 그리고 어떠한 인연과 더불어 있는가? 오늘을 살아가는 동시대 사람들에게 자연과의 관계를 성찰할 수 있는 장을 마련할 것이다.

'Embrace the Nature - In(因) and Yeon(緣)'
In(因) – the basic motive to from the cause
Yeon(緣) – the catalysis by In(因)
So, the word In-Yeon(因緣 or Nidana) means chain of causation that makes solid result by immediate and mediate powers.
In a meanwhile, many artists work on the Nature as theme or materials of their artworks. What causes these artists to embrace the nature at the beginning? And what makes them to continuously make that relationship?
Since ancient times, eastern culture recognizes the Nature as living foundation for Human being and also make as theme of public debate. In the other hand, western culture intellectually analysis the Nature and recognize as a utility value. Eastern culture accepts and concentrates the Nature as it is and harmonized with human life, however, western culture evaluates the Nature as materialistic value. These differences between eastern and western culture developed with different cultural characteristics. However, in these days, they expanding the breadth of understanding through frequent contacts and exchanges. The new paradigm of Human and the Nature in this 21th century, world-widely concentrate on sharing in both side. So, we are trying to give a small question to contemporary people and art.
“In these days, how we embrace the Nature with what kind of thoughts and attitudes?” And “What kind of relationship (In-Yeon) we belong with?”
We are providing ‘forum’ to introspect relationship with the Nature for a coeval who lives these days.
