Ceaselessly Changing Blue Waves

Like a mirror reflecting the sky, water undergoes ceaseless transformation as its color and texture change depending on the time of the day and weather conditions. We are already well aware that the lucid and tranquil water like the surface of a mirrorcould rage ferociously by turning into midnight blue colored darkness. The irregular and unpredictable force of the nature day after day creates high and low tides of the ocean, thereby altering the shapes of the land. Ultimately, the fortune of the land is determined by the movements of the ocean and the land, occasionally, is given the title island.

To Han Arim, water is the theme that reflects the tacit rules of the world in which we live. The waves approach the artist with certain orderliness. Indiscriminate and sudden attack of the wave that unexpectedly rush in like rising tide and serenely recedes like the ebb tide carries various characters and elements of life that the artist sympathizes with. Life always imparts unexpected results to human kind, which at times are ordeals and happiness at other times. Life continues by repeating the process of discovering such continuing surprises. Although it is not possible to know what is at the end of the road, it is clear  that is the final destination and we cannot stop the time that has already started. The flow illustrated by the waves of Han, Arim, like such life, continues to flow without stopping by refusing to be fixated at some place in any form whatsoever. Countless rain streaks that block one’s vision are mingled with the blue water waves directed to somewhere. In the midst of the collapse of the boundaries between the sky and the ocean, up and down, and in and out on the canvas, the translucent rain curtain spreads out between the 2 sets of the blueness plays the role of connecting the divided realms of the 2 blueness by generating a passage similar to the water waves. Such rain contains the pieces of the world that appear differently depending on the viewpoint as well as the possibilities of changes they have. These possibilities that belong to the order of life that contains the artist’s unique definitions are hidden in the iconographical image.

What is left behind as these 2 waves sweep over is the configuration of the land. Although the land and the water have opposite properties: one isfixed while the other has no particular shape, respectively, still they interact ceaselessly. Han, Arim considers it as a cooperative relationship and focuses on the existence of the double-sidedness illustrated in such relationship. Moreover, the remnant entity generated in the midst of these flows, that is, the ‘island’, has neutral property that belongs neither to the land nor water. It is a flexible entity whose configuration can change with time although it is fixated. When one is on the island, it feels like a sturdy land; but if viewed from the ocean, it looks like an entity floating on the water. The flow that crosses between the land and the water created such dual-natured existence. Although an island is an isolated space, it is in fact not severed from anything at all. Since it is the only entity that can be seen from a diverse range of perspectives, it definitely is an appropriate theme to explain human beings. The island, which appears to maintain a single configuration but naturally transforms again, has become a very familiar metaphor that continuously appears in the works of the artist.

The flow in the midst of the pouring down rain streaks traverses through the world in diverse colors and configurations. This appearance is akin to the journey of a lonely traveler faced by great deal of difficulties in discerning the past and the future. In the works of Han, Arim that are directed towards the void in time, all of the water, the land and the sky are achieving peculiar harmony through composition and configuration that transcends their physical limitations. The artist, while ceaselessly gazing at the path that water, which traverses the surrealistic scenery, comes into contact, is serenely and conscientiously waiting for the conclusion at the end of that path, which in fact may have been the starting point. In the midst of the repetitive act of composedly painting the water waves layer by layer, the artist immerses herself into those waves by erasing the desire to become fixated.

An island appears in the midst of countless number of rain drops then shortly disappears to be revealed again as another island. Although our perception recognizes it as a single fixated substantive entity, these 2 are only a temporary cohesion in the flow and are never fixated or completely combined. Moreover, we ourselves are also momentary revelations in such flow. However, we experience fragmented world because we view the world by fragmenting it. Similar to the differences between the ocean experienced with our own body and the ocean experienced only through our view as a scenery, we can only be liberated from the perceived ‘flow’ when we are able to see ‘I that experience’, while ‘experiencing’ at the same time.

Flow is generated in the midst of coexistence and continuous cooperative relationship of the dual nature of the substantive entities such as ‘Ying and Yang, color and void, up and down, and in and out’. As shadow always presumes the presence of light, there would be no awakening unless one is asleep. The external world is a reflection of our internal world and what is visible is governed by what is not visible. Duality of matter undergoes transformation of configuration through ceaseless tug-of-war. As such, the duality of the world creates changes and these continuous changes are the flow. Agonies in life are experienced when one is not able to understand such flow. Although the favorable and unfavorable events are in fact one and the same, we experience joy or agony depending on where we fix our focus.

Water waves that infinitely change its appearance remind us that changes are the only order in the world. The act of drawing water waves with limitless lines is a form of meditation that cleanses the heart that rejects changes and is inclined towards configurations.
