Female Body as Space United with Mother Nature

Lee, Seung-hoon, Cyart Institute

Artist Minja Lee has been interested and worked in an area of femininity and traced probability of pictorial expressions on its biological and socio-cultural meanings. Regarding women’s position which has seemed to remain as an object of outsider by Western view of identity, the artist shows her intention in works to modify the woman that is objectified by a masculine view and the visual attitude fixed by this kind of direction and her works well demonstrate interpretations on the female body as a female artist from a different point of view which used to consider women as a passive entity described as an object for reproduction.

The artist sees the various formative elements shown from the female body as symbolic ones which reveal femininity and works to visualize the female bodies through reading the meaning stratification from them.

However, with a meaning that it is not a body objectified by the masculine view but the female body observed from an independent point of view, that way of creation sometimes fully depicts sexual organs inside the female body while disgregating them in a fragmentary form or combining them or connect them to shapes drawn from genitals by compressing a woman’s vitality with symbolization of a flower at other times. In addition, it seems that the female body compressed with free curves which take physical images of the female body as a motif is rather sublimated as noble beauty than being esthetic.

It can be seen that images on femininity shown in her works are approached with contrary aspects from two directions, which are to directly express sex of women like by using sexual organs inside the female body and to indirectly show femininity through compressing it with images of nature which are likened to femininity such as multi-layered curves or shapes of flowers respectively.

It is indicated that these two methods complementarily compose a canvas and make a visual structure in a different dimension from that of men which sees superficial, outward images by exposing not only images of femininity seen from outside but various signals on psychological circumstances inside a woman. Focusing on a point that a man could never experience the world of a series of procedures for giving birth including menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth and breast-feeding and that it is compared to the phenomenon of cosmic, natural life, artist Minja Lee intends to paint sex originating from the female body and life phenomenon in a viewpoint united with Mother Nature. Thus, the artist expresses natural images such as mountains and valleys through crossing them those of the female body in multi-layered images, which means that she intends to use the indicating system with signifiers on images for femininity rather as an ambiguous way than in one direction. That signifies two directions of the female body and Mother Nature and in other words, that refers to the current of energy such as flow of internal desires and cosmic vitality for women.

While tracing the essence of femininity, the artist seems to think that life phenomena inside the female body are eventually overlapped with those of Mother Nature and that is in line with the essence of femininity. This thinking is likely to make her works focus more on a point where femininity and vitality of Mother Nature are crossed and therefore, her recent works are assumed to display more simplified formative images and canvases with abstractness which are compressed by colors and lines on white blank. It is considered that the artist’s attitude to read femininity in creation of the universe and flow of energy beyond biological reproduction is related to looking at humans and nature not in a perspective of dominance and subordinance but as an organic relation as in Eastern thinking which begins from ecological and naturalistic thinking.

To the artist, the female body is no more at a position of outsider but symbolic space where natural flow from birth of life to the creation of universe is implied so the female body is being developed to image expressions which sometimes look soft, wild or confusing like qualities of original energy and the order of lines and colors such as the flow of nature or the wave of universe seems to advance and change into unity of femininity and Mother Nature a view of the artist.
