조강남의 최신작들은 해밀턴이 예견한 것처럼 이전의 작업들에서 나아가 매우 분명하고 명확한 팝 아트적 접근의 속성을 보여준다.
특히 <꽃>을 모티브로 한 작품에만 한정되지 않고 보석이라든가 여인의 럭셔리한 욕망으로 상징하는 <캔디 걸> 탄생 시리즈의 작품들이 그것이다.
어쩌면 성격이나 출발은 다르지만 부르주아가 미술작업을 통해 인간의 무의식, 열정, 소외, 사랑, 성(性)과 개인적 문제들을 표출하는데 치열하게 몰두하였다면 조강남은 이 오브제와 이미지를 통하여 여성의 위상이 주는 팝아트적인 생활을 암시하는 방식으로 제작되고 고민하고 있음은 분명하다.
우리는 무엇보다, 여성의 내적인 삶의 충동이나 욕망들이 인간이 갖고 있는 가장 본질적인 것이라는 것을 인지 해주는 것이 그의 작품에 대한 가장 의미 있는 평가가라고 생각한다.
그러기에 그 여성의 본능은 여성의 생명력과 본능 그리고 파방트적인 시대의 삶과도 무관하지 않다.
우리는 그의 작품 속에서 여성들이 변해가는 팝아트적인 욕망 그리고 표출을 주의깊게 볼 필요가 있다.
작품은 예술가가 선택하고 결정하는 것이지만 정신세계가 진정한 예술의 본질이다. 그 본질이 빛날수록 그림이란 그것을 보는 사람을 통하여 비로소 높은 생명력을 지니게 되기 때문이다.
조강남의 여성이 가지는 본능적인 욕망, 그 세계의 표현은 이제 서막에 불과하다. 이 포그트 팝아트의 시대에 그가 욕망의 언어가 보석과 만나 정착 된다면 그는 또 다른 시선과 감성을 지닌 여성작가로 태어날 것은 분명해 보인다.
