Painting on the horizon of microscopic space

As history of painting is called as that of reproduction, to reproduce the world has been interests of artists. Though there were changes coming with non-object abstract painting appearing in 20th century, abstract painting itself also clearly left from having a concrete object in nature but, from a perspective that it could have agreed with other dimensions of the world such as inner emotions or abstract thinking, the issue of reproduction can be discussed yet again also in the field of abstract painting. Then, what comes to our mind at the moment may be whether pictorial interests can be rather turned to how far the world that humans can reproduce will ever reach.

In this context, we can see that work of the artist Young-Hoon Lee who has been working on microscopic space with the concept of complexspace is suggestive. It is because what he is expressing is of concrete objects existing in the world called nature, even though his work seemingly looks like abstract painting. What he focuses on, however, is related to microscopic space of objects so it is not the world visible to the humans’naked eye and it rather seems similar to images in abstract painting than everyday objects. In fact, an attitude to read through his work with frames of abstraction and concreteness or of object and nonobject is meaningless itself. It is because the complex space, a major concept in his work, has come from time-space concept which has been created with abstract imagination in the field of physics and mathematics but it is still for picturing concrete objects and world. Therefore, what is needed to read through his work is understand the world that he tries to reproduce rather than any frames in art history.

Renaissance artists came to learn about perspective technique from the advancement in scientific technology, that is, how to effectively display three-dimensional world where human beings lead their lives onto two-dimensional space such as canvas and, thanks to that, painting ever since has shown clear distinction from that of before. Like this, the artist Young-Hoon Lee tries to display the world which humans live in, particularly the microscopic space, onto two-dimensional plane. To paint out the modern world where the foundation with traditional worldview such as Euclidean geometry or Newton’s theory of gravitation has shaken, he thought there should be a new dimension of horizon like a quantum-mechanical worldview and he seems to intend to create a system as the artist on his own and to paint objects in time and space upon it under a new system. As perspective drawing method that reflected humans’ eye level was invented during the Renaissance, changes in vision served as a chance to move into people-oriented thinking system in some degree. Like this, to draw quantum-mechanical world can also allow to experience the way how an orderly system in the real world and an indefinite one in the microscopic world are concerned, which seems that it can cause some cracks in modern people’s thinking system.

On this working process, however, the artist Young-Hoon Lee does not directly adopt the coordinate system based on geometrical signs which mathematicians or physicists would use. It would be because what he aims to paint with pictorial imagination is not only some concepts of time and space. As he adapts the microscopic world that cannot be seen with naked eye into pictorial images in the visible world onto two-dimensional plane to make it a painting, he intends to draw aesthetic and philosophical sense and vision of thinking rather than the physical vision in quantum mechanics.

Since the complex space that the artist borrows from quantum mechanics actually means combination of imaginary and real numbers, in other words, the combination of the real world with real numbers and the space with imaginary numbers that are not sensately captured like the concept of complex number, it means the world that is visible and that, at the same time, does come into one’s visibility. From a quantum-mechanical perspective that one substance simultaneously exists in several locations or a substance develops and then disappears in vacuum or it burrows through a wall, the complex space is the world that cannot be understood with classical worldview and that can serve as a system to change a paradigm of philosophical thinking such as existing existence or recognition.

In that sense, it is very interesting that the artist Young-Hoon brings the concept of ‘complex space’ into painting and shows the way out in a different dimension beyond abstraction and concreteness in the area of painting which seems to come right into a dead end by breaking down the horizon which used to be a fundamental basis in the field of thinking and sense such as object and nonobject, reproduction and expression, reality and phantom, existence and absence, sense and recognition. His works also well depict that issues of scientific knowledge, visual recognition and existence are not far away and also suggests that art, science and philosophy be discussed on an integrated level, which makes his works be worthy of note.
