Statement

Hyon Gyon(박현경)

Somehow, I am attracted to sadness and pains derived from inscrutability, absurdity and contradiction that human beings face in their lifetimes, that is, emotions related to human unhappiness.

Failure of desires or will hurts the human mind resulting in paranoia or compulsive emotions. Interwoven emotions are accompanied by negative feelings including pain, anger, sadness and resentment, which have been regarded as ugly so that they are suppressed inside without being released.

These negative feelings are continuously repeated as we live and until we die. What I intend to do is to bring out those unexpressed negative feelings and suppressed negative energy, and convert, reduce, and purify them into any form. As a process for this aim, I have concentrated on Korean shamanism, one of traditional Korean cultures, and been influenced by it.

Korean shamanism or shamans have been considered as fearful and despised, they are still deeply rooted in our culture. In the past, they were deeply related to universal emotions of human beings like happiness, sadness, love and resentment.

For example, our ancestors used to face the reality and pray for better lives through the rituals of shamanism called “Gut; Exorcism”. Obsession over life, fear of the dark and desire for something that is not in one’s possession that are expressed in “Gut;Exorcism” are not ugly things. They are just struggling to have happy lives. Who on earth would want or choose an unhappy life? This is what corresponds with something that I am eager to express in my art.

Specifically, in “Gut; Exorcism”, we can notice some exaggerated parts, which seem even violent, and they transcend the ugliness, becoming very ironic and arousing laughter.

The moments of opposing forces of Yin and Yang, conversion of Yin to Yang, and explosion of suppressed negative energy are the pivotal aspects of my artworks. Even if they are ugly and hideous, we don’t have to beautify them.

The image of people living their lives and the emotions emerged within their lives have been the fundamental power.

The strange unidentifiable ghosts and monsters in my artworks, which are hard to say are of this world, are neither human, nor completed motifs.

It can be said that it is an arena where indescribable emotions, such as sadness, happiness and pleasure, are harmonized and collide with each other, where happiness and unhappiness, good and evil are swallowed up, and where generation and extinction of energy of different vectors are constantly repeated.

In front of natural disasters or terrible events caused by destiny, life and death that human beings cannot go against, art might be endlessly powerless. However, that would be the exact reason why the fundamental power of art is required.

It means that it requires surely acknowledging the reality, newly understanding the liveness, predicting the future, and passing on the skills that would help people to go through frustrations they face in life. Predicting the future where all creation revives when the sun rises. I would like to drag out the positive power by sending the message that the chaos and hardship in front of us is not a complete darkness where everything is over but a temporary darkness with a new possibility and potentials, as well as the time for regeneration. This is the eternal theme I pursue.
