나는 태어난 지 13일만에 아버지를 잃었고, 월남전에 참전하여 훈련소에서 다리 부상을 입었던 두 번째 오빠를 그가 29살일 때 잃었습니다. 그리고 2009년에는 봄부터 11월까지 여섯 차례 응급실에 가야 했던 사랑하는 어머니를 갑자기 잃었습니다. 그래서 나는 내 예술이 더 이상 창조에 관한 작품이 아니라 삶과 죽음 그리고 부활에 관한 철학이라는 사실을 깨달았습니다.

1995년부터 나는 mixed media 분야에서 활동하여 왔습니다. 르네상스부터 인상주의에 이르는 고대 역사와 웅대한 자연의 힘으로부터 찾을 수 있는 창조적 예술을 따라 오랜 시간 미국, 유럽 그리고 한국을 여행하였지만, 결국 일리노이주 샴페인에 있는 오빠의 집에서 예술에 대한 가장 위대한 사랑을 찾게 되었습니다. 그곳에서 찾은 이미지를 표현하기 위하여 내 실험적 표현법을 사용하였고 그 결과 상상력에 근거한 현대적 인상주의의 작품을 창작하게 되었습니다.

현실의 충실한 재현에 근거하여 일상적 대상을 접근하고 동양 전통과 현대 예술을 결합한 표현 방식을 통하여 어머니의 평온함과 편안함을 전달하려고 했습니다. 그리고 투명한 색조를 이용하여 저 만의 색을 창조하였습니다. 내 창작 활동은 일리노이주 블루밍턴 고등학교에서 시작되었고, 첫 작품이 그 곳 Pantagraph 뉴스지에 게재되었습니다. 일리노이주 스프링필드에 있는 주립 박물관에 일리노이대학교 미대를 대표하는 신예 여류미술가전에 참여하기도 하였습니다. 그리고 인디애나주 블루밍턴에서 개최된 ‘National Juried’ 에서 1등을 수상하였고, 시카고 예술인 연합에서 ‘4인의 여성 예술가’로 선정되었습니다.
