행복한 기억의 오르골, 이브의 집에서...

구약성서에 등장하는 최초의 여자 이브,

그림 속 이브는 왜 등을 돌린 채 얼굴을 드러내지 않고 있는 것일까...

이브는 곧 작가의 분신이며, 이를 보는 우리 모두의 자화상이다.

따사로운 햇살, 그리고 부드러운 바람에 꽃들이 노래하는 어느 오후였다.

이브는 이 아름다운 풍경 한켠으로 달리던 자전거를 멈추어 섰다.

끝없는 그 길을 잠시... 쉬어가려나 보다.

정원 가장자리에 앉은 그녀는 한손을 턱에 괸채 생각에 잠겼다.

아마도 자신이 엮어놓은 아름다운 집에서

삶의 순환 속에서 힘겹게 달려온 그동안의 삶을 되뇌이고 있을 것이다.

어항 속 물고기는 한가로이 헤엄치며, 의자 위 고양이는 행복을 꿈꾼다.

꽃비가 내리는 뒷뜰의 오리들은 열맞추어 평화로이 산책하며,

푸른정원의 나무와 새들은 사랑을 노래한다.

바로, 작가가 꿈꾸는 이상향의 순간이다.

자신이 꿈꾸던 세상 앞에선 이브,

그녀는 미소 짓는다. 고요한 눈물과 함께...

어쩌면 그 모습을 들키지 않으려 등을 돌린 채 눈물로 꽃을 피워내고 있는 것은 아닐까.

예술가로서 인생을 살아가는 것은 결코 쉬운 길이 아니다. 흔히 우리가 일컫는 예술이란 사전적 의미로 미적(美的)작품을 형성시키는 인간의 창조활동이다. 미(美), 그 아름다움의 창조는 고통의 절정에서 춤을 추는 고귀한 행위와 같다. 신비롭고, 영롱한 광채를 드러내기 위해 긴 어둠과 고통을 이겨내야 하는 진주와 같이, 시린 겨울의 모진바람과 추위를 견뎌내야 이듬해 꽃을 피워내는 자연의 섭리처럼, 신수원의 회화가 엮어낸 다채로운 색채의 심포지엄 뒤에는 고통의 찰나를 아름다움으로 승화시키는 예술가의 삶이 스며있다.

작가 신수원, 그녀의 회화가 만들어 낸 형형색색의 빛이 보는 이들에게 미소와 행복, 희망과 환희를 느끼게 하는 것은 하늘에서 내리는 비가 거친 땅을 부드럽게 하듯, 창조의 순간을 위해 오랜 고뇌를 참아내며 남몰래 흘린 그녀의 눈물이 씨앗이 되어 아름다운 색채로 돋아났기 때문일 것이다. 그 빛깔은 우리의 영혼을 맑게 하며, 우리 영혼의 창을 닦아준다. 비온 뒤의 무지개처럼....

작가 신수원은 삶의 고통과 시련을 이겨낼 수 있게 해준 정신적 원천을 자신의 유년시절의 풍경 속에서 발견한다. 자신이 바라던 이상향의 세계는 그리 먼 곳에 있던 것이 아니었다. 해맑게 웃으며 뛰어놀던 푸른 들판, 자신을 지켜준다고 믿었던 마을의 작은 소나무, 아침이면 무리지어 어디론가 사라졌다 밤이 되면 언제나 뒷마당으로 돌아오는 오리들의 모습, 동심의 눈으로 바라보았던 시골풍경의 기억 속에 있었던 것이다. 작가는 힘겨운 일상에 서 위로받고 싶을 때 뚜껑을 열면 아름다운 멜로디가 흐르는 오르골처럼 어린시절의 행복한 기억을 열어보았던 것이다. 꿈의 한 장면처럼 동화 속 환상이 연상되는 신수원의 회화는 초현실주의의 기법인 데페이즈망이 돋보인다. 초현실주의 회화에서는 낯익은 물체를 뜻하지 않은 장소에 놓음으로써 꿈속에서나 이루어질 법한 화면을 구성한다. 이는 보는 사람의 마음 속 깊이 잠재되어 있는 무의식의 세계를 해방시키는 역할을 한다. 상호간의 이질적인 이미지들의 배치를 통해 신비로운 효과를 내어, 틀에 박힌 시야를 탈피하게끔 해주는 것이다.

신수원의 회화에는 실내를 가득 채우는 비현실적인 화분을 연출하는가 하면 화면 속 화분에 또 다른 창을 연출하기도 한다. 이를 통해 보는 이들의 마음 속 깊이 가라앉아 있던 내면이 표면으로 떠올라 꿈꾸는 듯한 환각을 일으키게 한다. 또한 사물 고유의 형태를 변형시키거나 자유로운 색상을 통해 재현의 엄격한 질서로부터 과감하게 벗어난 표현형식을 하고 있다. 고전적 색채조화를 무시하고 격렬하고 자유분방한 색채를 사용함으로써 내면의 본질을 충동적이며 상징적 이미지로 자유롭게 표현하고 있는 것이다. 앙리 마티스(Henri Matisse, 1869-1954)는 <모자를 쓴 여인>에서 작가의 주관적 감각에 의한 색채표현으로 인물의 고유색을 탈피하고 노란색, 녹색 등의 원색을 사용해 자유롭고 강렬한 표현방법을 보여주었으며, 대담한 색채의 사용으로 주목받은 프란츠 마르크(Franz Marc, 1880-1916)는 <꿈, 1912>에서 여인과 말의 다양한 색을 이용하여 비현실적이고 동화같은 세계를 주관적 색상으로 표현하고 있다. 그의 그림은 단지 유토피아에 대한 허구가 아닌 산업화 되어 가는 인간세상에서 순수를 되찾으라는 외침이었다. 이와 같이 신수원의 회화 또한 다이나믹한 원색들로 이루어진 풍경과 일상적인 소재들의 강렬하고 생동하는 색상대비를 통해 마치 꿈속의 풍경을 보는 듯 몽환적인 환영을 일으킨다. 그리고 이것은 자신이 희구하는 순수함이 내재된 진정한 유토피아를 구현해 내기 위한 기법인 것이다.

현대예술은 더 이상 우리의 영혼에 말을 걸지 않는다. 기괴함, 쇼크, 낯설음, 추함으로 대중은 예술과 점점 더 멀어진다. 우리는 예술작품을 대할 때조차 평안을 찾을 수 없게 된 것이다. 예술의 순수성을 잃어가고 있는 시대상황에서 신수원의 회화는 보는이들에게 여전히 예술은 사랑과 위안이라는 것을 믿게 해 줄 것이다.

오늘도 고단한 하루가 끝나간다.

오늘도 나는 ‘행복한 기억을 주는 오르골, 이브의 집’을 열어보다 잠이 든다.

그리고 오늘, 이브의 집에서 마티스를 만났다.

그의 평화로운 목소리가 들려왔다.

“미술이란 고달픈 하루가 끝난 후 쉴 수 있는 안락의자 같이 편안해야 한다.”

Why does the woman in a picture turn her back and hide her face?

Eve is the painter's alter ego, and is the portrait of ourselves.

One day in the afternoon, flowers come out in the warm sunshine and tender breeze.

Eve stops the pedals from moving forward.

She may be take a rest...

She is lost in thought with her chin propped up on her hand.

In the beautiful garden decorated by her

She would look back upon her life.

The fishes in the fish bowl swim with calmness and the cat on the chair dreams happiness.

The ducks in the backyard take a stroll in a line.

The trees and birds in the green garden sing a song of bliss.

That is the ideal world that the artist has dreamed.

Eve faced with a the land of dreams

Smiles with silent tears in her eyes...

She may possibly grow flowers with her tears, turning her back not to be caught.

It's never easy to live one's own life as a artist. The dictionary definition of Art usually means activities created by people to make aesthetic works. Creating a beauty is same as a noble act of dancing at the peak of pain. As a pearl endures the pain and long darkness to show mysterious and bright luster and as the provision of nature bears a heavy wind and cold to flower, symposium of diverse colors in her paintings involves the artist's life to transform a moment of pain into a beauty.

The iridescent colors of the artist, Shin soo-won, do a viewer's heart good as if rains have made ground soft. Because her tears for the flashpoint of creation become seeds and grow as beautiful colors. Those colors cleanse our souls and wipe the windows of our spirits. Like a rainbow after rain...

The artist seeks emotional source to overcome agonies and troubles of life from her childhood memories. The ideal world is not that far away. That is in the sight of the rural landscape in her childhood memories, such as green fields that she romped on with smile, the small pines that looked after her and the images of docks that disappeared in the morning and came back at night in her backyard. When the artist wants to be comforted in a hard day, she opens her happy memories of childhood as if to open a musical box ringing good melody. The application of depaysement, which is one of the surrealism techniques, stand out in her paintings associated with fantasy of fairy tales like a piece of dream. Surrealism paints are composed of screens by putting an unfamiliar figure on an unexpected place. It plays a role to liberate unconscious world from the bottom of viewer's heart. Through the arrangement of mutual different images, it is help to break a stereotypical screen and have a mystery effect.

The artist Shin soo-won paints a room which is full of unrealistic pots and another screen in a pot in the screen. It will allow viewer's inside to float on the surface and cause hallucination as if they are in a dream. Also she has the expression forms which away from strict oder of reproduction, by transforming the unique form of objects and coloring freely. She freely shows the internal essence into impulsive and symbolic images by ignoring the traditional color harmony and using intense and freewheeling colors. In Henri Matisse's Woman with the Hat(1905), he avoided local colors and showed the free and strong expression with painter's subjective sense by using primary colors such as yellow, green and so on. And Franz Marc painted unrealistic fairytale world with subjective colors by using diverse colors for women and horses in Dream(1912). His picture is not the imagination about utopia but the voice for recovering one's purity in an industrialized world. Shin soo-won's paintings also have a dreamy atmosphere using violent and vivid contrast colors of everyday objects and dynamic primary colors of landscape. It is the technique to realize a true utopia with innocence that is just what she had wished for.

Contemporary Art doesn't talk to our souls any more. The public is gradually estranged from Art because of a sense of grotesqueness, shock, unfamiliarity and ugliness. We hardly find peace even we appreciate a work of art. In the situation of time losing the artistic purity, I think that Shin soo-won's paintings would tell public that Art is still a love and comfort.

The exhausting day is drawing to an end.

While opening 'the musical box of happy memories', I fall into a sleep.

And I meet Matisse at eve's home today.

His peaceful voice comes in my ear.

"Art should be comfortable like an armchair to take a rest after an exhausting day."
