Hwang, Nam Gyu- The Scenary the Mind Desires

 The everyday objects are presented rather in a unique way. As the forms of the objects are inflated significantly or reduce them smaller, the changes in the size of the familiar objects gives the impression of strange and wonderful. As if it was expanded by breathing air into it or as if it was a large object for advertisement it is place.  And on the other side, it seems like we are looking at stationery product created with a cute design.

Although it is a representation of real objects, they are usually bigger or smaller and resembles of an object that has been simplified. It is a another form of a diversified object that resembles the existing shape of an object. They are in self-existence in the space by resembling similar characters, pop icons, or cartoon images. The unfamiliarity of the familiar objects as well as the sweet and familiarity, facing the strangeness of everyday objects through changes in their sizes, sculpture frame that positively attracts design elements, and the installation production which has naturally placed everyday objects in different pedestals, around the floor and space are eye catching. In addition, with colorful and urbane automotive paints, the objects that came back to life with a different color skin as a result of being artificially colored as pastel, they change into fascinating subjects that have based on esthetics of consumer goods in te society along with de-realization.

 

An automobile is the most luxurious consumer goods and it is a symbol and an object that represents a person's social status and wealth, preference, and taste. In that sense the brand and color of the automobile becomes a sensitive selection criteria in the consumer society. In addition, the colors reveal the common desires and preferences. Nature is being set as place and space that saves the human beings of the reality system. Maybe because of that reason but these two different areas surfaces out of one body. The form of an apple connecting number of people aggregated into one, a palm tree growing out of a car, a four leaf clover growing out a man's neck wearing a suit, and a car, chair, and shoes on one axis all appear. On the surfaces of all these objects are inlaid with human forms and there are human images that have been encoded in line briefly. All the human forms are in poses that look like they are dancing. They are symbolic humans that are made into look happy, filled with joy, and thrilled with joy. As it approaches into the target, in the end, the scene of the surface becoming one is made. It is tenaciously clinging to the surface of the apple, high heels, chair, and the surface of the automobile and it is also inlaid on the tree and cloud, cloud, and others. The desire of humans are transcendental yet mundane and sometimes the two conflicting desires are tangled into one body structure. The scenary shown by Hwang, Nam Gyu is the appearance of a modern person who is chasing after desire and at the same time, a person who wants to return to nature by escaping from the competitive structure of power and capital, materials and worldly desires or it also reveals a desire for the ideal world which is the opposite of that world.

In the end, the artist is honestly showing his pure desire that he dreams of. This is also bordering the Utopian and a kind of longing for ideals. To the artist, the world that he expressed through flowers, trees, clouds, and others is that world. Universally, the way that natural beauty is presented as the ideal world is a very familiar thing in the Eastern culture.  Landscape painting is that of the context and a folk story falls in that category. Actually, all the images proposed and implemented the Utopias of the time. By borrowing the magical power of the images, the artists are showing that world in a virtual and welcoming way.

 

The scenary of Ipseok-ri, Sudong-myeon, Masuk where Hwang, Nam Gyu's studio is located was remarkably quiet and graceful. While living in the nature and spending a certain period of time while working, I believe that the artist suddenly began to focus on the healing powers of the nature. Actually, the studio space of an artist and the surrounding scenary and environment obviously change the world of an artist. The work is produced in nature that is impossible to produce in the city. Through sculpture, he is embodying the simple but urgent dreams and ideals of a human being.
