호수와 눈 그리고 빨간색의 의상을 입은 순수함의 전형인 산타클로스는 핀란드를 상징하는 대표이미지이다. 대안공간건희에서는 핀란드 작가 Juha Suonpaa (유하 쑤언페) “Holy Melancholy“ 전을 통하여 이러한 전형적인 핀란드의 스테레오 타입에 대한 다양한 물음을 던진다. 전시 작품 속에서 산타클로스 이미지는 현대 문명의 평범한 곳곳을 무대로 작가에 의해 변형되고 과장이 더해진다. 성스러운 하얀 눈은 건조한 호수의 이미지로 전환되고, 전 세계 가장 잘 알려진 산타 클로스는 외롭고도 지친 이미지로 자살까지 서슴치 않는다. 사진 속 평범한 장소와 상황은 또한 치밀하게 작가에 의해 모방된 핀란드 현대미술에서의 이미지 차용이다. 위트있게 또는 부적절한 디테일을 가미하여 새로운 또는 현대적인 아니면 원래 존재하지도 않았던 가상의 산타클로스는 이렇게 반복적으로 독창화되는 것이다. 상업논리에 의해 만들어진 가공된 이미지 그리고 핀란드의 현대예술이 가지는 스타일적 메너리즘에 대한 비판적 접근은 사진 속에 숨겨져있는 작가의 모방기법으로 재치있게 완성되어진다. 유하 쑤언페는 현재 템퍼대학 응용과학단과대학의 순수미술 학장을 역임하고 있으며, 2009년 가을학기에는 한국 중앙대학교의 객원교수를 역임했다.

핀란드의 총 인구는 5백 만 명. 이들은 세계에서 가장 어려운 언어를 모국어로 사용한다. 핀란드의 국민 정체성은 이미 잘 알려진 것처럼 순수 미술을 기반으로 강화되었다.
가장 널리 알려진 몇몇 순수 미술 작품들은 핀란드인의 뿌리를 보여줌과 동시에, 핀란드 국민 모두가 공감할 수 있는 추억을 불러일으키는 힘을 가지고 있다. 이러한 전형적인 이미지들은 스튜어트 홀의 문학 이론과 사회 내의 재현을 다루고 있는 Juha Suonpaa (유하 쑤언페)의 한 습작의 재료가 된다. 시각적 재현이 어떻게 불문율, 유의한 구조, 권력 및 사회적 성관계를 보여주는가를 주제로 한 작품이다.
최근 “Holy Melancholy” 프로젝트에서 작가는 과거의 문화와 그것이 가지고 있는 근원적 가치를 기반으로 시각적 정체성을 재조명한다. 작가는 원작 회화를 거의 모방하다시피 한 사진 작품을 통해 핀란드의 고정 관념적 이미지를 그대로 보여준다. 표절이 아닌, 자신만의 변덕스럽거나 혹은 부적절한 디테일을 가미, 갑작스런 끼어들기와 심지어는 익살과 위트를 원작 위에 재해석함으로써 핀란드의 새로운 정체성을 보여주는 사진 작품을 창조한다.

작가는 유명한 현대순수 사진 작품들에 자주 등장하는 스타일적 매너리즘에 변형을 가하고 과장을 더해 자신의 모방 기법을 한 단계 끌어올렸다. 모방과 부조화를 통해 서양미술의 예술사진, 특히 많은 국제사진전에서 나타난 핀란드 현대 순수예술 사진이 갖는 심미적 형태에 부자연미를 더하고 있는 것이다.
그는 전 세계 가장 잘 알려진 상업적 아이콘인 산타 크로스를 이용하여 핀란드인의 또 다른 자아 이미지를 조명한다. 중립적이며 순수한 산타 크로스 이미지를 빌려 고독하고 내성적인 인물상을 미화함으로써 “Holy Melancholy”를 완성하는 것이다. 포스트 모던적 재해석과 빼놓을 수 없는 관객의 역할을 통해, 작가는 독창성의 모순을 꼬집는다. 그 어떤 새로운 위대한 작품도 관객의 인식과 이해 없이는 존재할 수 없으며, 이를 위해서 작가는 기존의 이미지들을 어느 정도 차용할 수밖에 없다는 것이다. 바로 이 순간 독창성은 문화적 반복, 고정관념 및 재해석을 통해 오염되고 훼손된다는 점을 강조한다.
