"한지를 통해 한민족의 삶과 문화를 표현하겠습니다" 함섭 한지화백
함섭은 1942년에 태어나 오래동안 유화 아크릴화를 캔버스에 작업해 왔으나, 1980년 초부터 과거에 대한 -한때 존재하다 지나가 버린 것에 대한 향수로서가 아닌- 그 문화의 흐름속에서, 자신을 찾아 보려고 전통닥종이를 표현 매재로 한지화를 개척해 가는 작가이다.
그의 작품은 간혹 어떤뜻으로 유화처럼 보여지기도 하지만 그것은 두껍게 전통식으로 만들어진 닥종이를 그 바탕으로한 작품이다. 물에 적신 색한지 고서 조각들을 한점한점 올려 붙이고 뜯어 붙이며 솔로 두두리고 파괴시켜 표현된 형과 색의 진수, 닥종이의 독특한 '맛'만을 마음에 두고 제작한다. 함섭은 재료 본래 모습이나 바탕을 완전히 달라지게하여 작품안에서 다시 태어나게 하는 이 과정속에서, 한번도 본적이 없는 동과 서, 과거와 현재가 혼합되어 한국 전통의 맛이 베어나는 현대회화를 제작하는 것이다.
Ham Seop Invited Exhibition
Ham Seop was born in 1942 and for many years worked on canvas in oils and acrylic medium, early in the 1980's, however, he began to cxplore paper art using traditional Korean mulberry paper as his medium, in an attermpt to express himself as an artist without nostalgia for the past, for what once existed but is now over and gone, though still working with in the continuum of that culture.
His works may sometimes resemble oil-paintings in certain respects, but they are in fact composed using a thick sheet of mulberry paper made in traditinal manner as their basic support, Colored sheets of paper and old books are soaked in water, then the fragments are matched and fixed to this support, while tearing and fixing, he beats them with a hard brush, creathig his work by concentrating uniquely on the particular 'flavor' of the mulberry paper, the essence of pattern and color expressed through an initial destruction. Ham Seop completely transforms the original appearance and nature of his basic materials, they are rebone in his work, a process resulting in a hitherto unseen blending of East and West, of past and present and yielding works of contemporary art replete with a traditional Korean flavor.
