석불
본 ‘석불’ 연작은 한국의 불교가 전성기를 이룬 신라 시대(4~8세기)와 고려 시대(10~14세기)의 유적지를 직접 답사하며 찍은 석불의 사진을 토대로 새로운 미디어를 접목하여 다른 시각적 표현을 찾는 과정이다. 석불은 이름도 알 수 없는 어느 석공이 거대한 바위를 쪼아 부처의 모습을 드러내기까지의 긴 인고의 시간을 담고 있다. 오랜 세월의 풍파를 견디며 닳고 무디어졌지만, 부처의 온화한 미소, 부드러운 옷깃은 여전히 숭고한 아름다움을 자아낸다.
이러한 석불의 매력에 빠져 여러 차례 석불을 카메라에 담고 종이에 출력하기를 반복해 보았지만, 현장에서 마주했던 석불의 존재감은 쉽게 표현되지 않았다. 석공이 석불을 완성하기까지 몰입한 긴 시간, 입체적 형상과 화강암의 질감 등을 평면에 나타내기 위해 여러 방법을 찾고 시도하던 끝에, 적층 방식으로 형상을 만들어내는 3D프린팅에 주목하게 되었다. 무수한 좌표를 반복적으로 움직이면서 재료를 쌓아 올리는 방식이 석불에서 발견할 수 있는 시·공간적 요소를 잘 드러낼 수 있다고 보았다.

기술적으로는 석불 사진의 밝은 영역은 얇게, 어두운 부위는 두껍게 반복적으로 재료를 적층하는 방식으로 고저 차가 있는 패널을 제작하였다. 완성된 패널 뒤에서 빛을 조사하면 투과율에 따라 명암이 표현된다. 출력물의 두께에 따른 적정한 빛의 투과율을 만들어내기 위해 다양한 재료를 실험하고 여러 시행착오를 거듭하였으며, 무엇보다 석불이 가진 화강암의 거친 질감을 표현하는 데 주안점을 두었다.
석불 탄생 과정의 오랜 시간에 비할 바는 아니지만, 재료를 수천 번 반복적으로 쌓아 올리는 3D프린팅 과정을 통해 석불의 ‘시간성’을 전달하고자 했으며, 이를 통해 만들어진 표면의 불규칙한 요철은 삼차원 조각이 가진 ‘물질성’을 드러내는 동시에 평면의 한계를 극복하기 위한 시도이다.

This series of "Stone Buddha" is a process of finding different visual expressions by combining new media based on photos of stone Buddhas taken during direct visits to historical sites during the Silla (4th and 8th centuries) and Goryeo (10th and 14th centuries), when Korean Buddhism was in its heyday. Stone Buddhas lasted long before an unknown stonemason pecked at a huge rock to reveal the Buddha's appearance. Despite being worn out after enduring many years of wind and waves, the Buddha's gentle smile and soft collar still create sublime beauty.
I fell in love with these stone Buddhas and repeatedly put them on the camera and printed them on paper several times, but the presence of them I encountered in the field was not easily expressed. I paid attention to 3D printing, which creates shapes through additive layers, after trying and finding various methods to show the three-dimensional shape and the texture of granite on a plane, the long time that stonemason immersed in completing the stone Buddha. It was believed that the method of stacking materials while moving countless coordinates repeatedly could well reveal the elements of time and space found in stone Buddhas.

Technically, a panel with a high-low difference was manufactured by repeatedly stacking materials thinly in the bright area and thickly in the dark area of the stone Buddha photograph. When light is irradiated from behind the finished panel, the light and shade are expressed according to the transmittance. Various materials were tested, and multiple trials and errors were repeated to create an appropriate light transmittance according to the thickness of the output. Above all, the focus was on expressing the rough texture of the granite of the stone Buddha.
Although it is not comparable to a long time in the stone Buddha birth process, it was intended to convey the "concept of time" of the stone Buddha through a 3D printing process that repeatedly stacks materials thousands of times. The irregular bump from the surface made through this is an attempt to overcome the limitations of the plane while revealing the "concept of material" of the three-dimensional sculpture.
